October’s Theme: What Reiki Can Teach Us About Grieving Well
Here’s why….
“Discovering more joy does not, I’m sorry to say, save us from the inevitability of hardships and heartbreaks. In fact, we may cry more easily, but we will laugh more easily, too. Perhaps we are just more alive. Yet as we discover more joy, we can face suffering in a way that ennobles rather than embitters. We have hardship without becoming hard. We have heartbreak without being broken.”
Grief is a fundamental human experience, an important aspect of the landscape of our lives. To grieve is to acknowledge love, and to hold space for loss. In many ways, grief is an expression of love, a way to tend the to the parts of ourselves that love deeply and deserve tenderness in the face of loss.
And yet we live in a culture that is highly death/loss-avoidant, and as an extension grief-avoidant as well. As a result, we are often encouraged to hide or downplay our grief, to get it over with as quickly as possible. This can make us feel afraid to grieve, and when we are afraid to grieve we become afraid to love, for they are connected. It can be difficult to find spaces that can hold the bigness and complexity of grief, can honor and understand the fullness of the experience.
We need spaces and practices that can help us grieve well. Reiki can help us get there…
The system of Reiki offers practices designed to connect with our full and complete Self, to make space within us and among us for the BIG feelings grief can bring, so that we can experience the fullness of our humanity and connections to each other.
In this 60-minute gathering, I’ll share insights gained from leading a year-long conversation with Reiki teachers about the connections between Grief and Reiki. We’ll explore what it means to grieve well, and the ways in which the system of Reiki can help us get there.
